WRU Ladies Championship
GWERNYFED 0 BURRY PORT 41
Following two hard fought wins for Gwernyfed teams over the weekend, first with the Youth winning a very close encounter at Builth on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon witnessing victory for the Men’s 1s XV at home to Llantwit Major, Gwernyfed Ladies XV aspired to complete a trio of victories when they played Burry Port at home on Sunday afternoon. It did not, however, prove to be the case, as their opponents galloped to a seven try win by 41 points to nil.
The West Wales opponents proved to be superior in all departments, scoring three tries in the first half and four in the second.
From the outset, Burry Port used their big forwards to run at Gwernyfed’s midfield, with support players able to exploit the resulting gaps in the home side’s defence and the first try was soon scored in the sixth minute. In contrast, Gwernyfed were only able to win limited possession and, with players often static when receiving the ball, their attacks lacked dynamism. Burry Port’s dominance throughout the 80 minutes was only marred by their ill-discipline, as they managed to give away 20 penalties, leading to three yellow cards.
So, its back to the training paddock for the Gwernyfed players, in order to work on ironing out deficiencies and improving performance, ready for their next game.
