A great weekend of Rugby started off with a large crowd supporting the local derby between Gwernyfed and Brecon Under 16s on Friday evening. In an excellent game both sides entertained showing the future promise is strong in both clubs. It was Gwernyfed who pulled away to register a fine 43-17 victory. The two senior men's side both had away fixtures in Gwent within a few miles so loaded up the bus. The First team kept their unbeaten run this season intact as they recorded a convincing 11 try victory against Whitehead 69-12. Following the usual pattern against bigger opposition who prefer the forward route Gwernyfed scored four first half tried to lead 26-12 at half time. In the second half the superior fitness saw a further seven tries with some excellent play up front releasing their exciting young backs. Lloyd Powell at no.8 had another outstanding game notching a try hatrick with winger Cal Ferguson and centre Gethin Davies notching a brace each. The win moves the side up to second place in the league with games in hand. The Athletic meanwhile consolidated their top spot on the Dragons league with a close victory against Blackwood Griffins with a 26-24 scoreline. Will Powell returning from injury led the way with a brace of tries,Gareth Dodd and Ieaun Thomas also touching down. The Ladies team rounded off a great weekend for senior Rugby as they defeated visitors Old Penarthians 24-20. The win sees them climb the league. Well led by skipper Bronnie Jones the home side notched four tries. A brace of tries from Summer Chick and one each from Meg Nicolas and Sophie Licence-Law aided by two important conversions by Cerys Evans cemented an excellent win. With many matches at junior and Red Kites level within the club over the weekend, overall it's been a very enjoyable weekend for players and supporters across the board.
