Cardiff Blues Youth Cup
GWERNYFED YOUTH 37 BEDDAU YOUTH 26
On a cold and frosty day that saw many games in Wales postponed, visitors Beddau made their way to the Brian Jones Memorial Field, with the result of the match set to determine the fate of their respective Blues Cup runs.
After victories over neighbours Brecon, Merthyr, Builth and Pontypridd - a narrow loss away to Treorchy put the latter two on the same points going into the game. With all interested parties agreeing after a pitch inspection that the game should go ahead, it was time to take the layers keeping the players warm off and the game to commence.
Gwernyfed’s senior side were all lined up to face Ynysowen, but the referee’s car broke down so spectators migrated to ensure a large crowd that was warmed up by some superb Rugby from the Green, White and Blacks. With the pack working well, outstanding contributions from James Griffiths on the flank, Ollie Rose at eight and pack leader for the day Alfred Bateman Lloyd in the boiler house gave a great platform for the ever impressive backs to be unleashed.
It wasn't long before the hard working and committed efforts of Dominic George paid off and he crossed for the first points of the day. Callum Ferguson ensuring five was improved to seven. From here on in, it was ping pong scores before second gear was found seeing Harris Saunders-Jones crossed for a superb individual effort of a try.
Crossing twice on the day, the ever impressive Matthew Price at outside half saw the Gwernufed lead grow and grow. Backing this contribution up was the powerful Dylan Skyrme, who like Price crossed twice, firstly through pure pace and the second seeing pure power, crossing with three tacklers on him.
A huge squad effort against a good Beddau side brought a victory home 37-26 on the day and made sure Gwernyfed Youth progressed further in the Cardiff Blues Cup where a spot in the final is the target.
