WRU Division 4 Cup Round 2
BEDWELLTY 19 GWERNYFED 34
Gwernyfed eased their way into the next round of the WRU Division 4 Cup with a comfortable six-try victory against fellow league team, Bedwellty.
The visiting side were first on the scoresheet when winger Calum Fergusson squeezed over with an acrobatic finish. Bedwellty, with the older and heavier pack, preferred the direct route and soon registered two penalties, cancelled out by another wide movement. Winger Will Lloyd took a fine long miss pass at pace, evaded several tackles well and linked with supporting full back Zack Snape who scored to recover a lead the green, white and blacks were not to relinquish.
Building upon territorial advantage, outside-half Gethin Davies found touch and with solid lineout ball cortesy of Cellan Skyrme, young no.8 Lloyd Powell was unstoppable as he powered over for Gwernyfed’s third try. Half time saw Jack Williams’s side with a 17-9 lead.
The second half was much the same, Powell having an outstanding game leading the forays and causing problems for the home side with powerful runs, inevitably notching his second from 25 yards out. Prys Eckley, who also had several good runs, was the catalyst for the next try, scrum half Tom Griffiths finding close support from Sam Clegg who made good yards. Winger Will Lloyd was on Clegg’s shoulder for the fifth try.
Bedwellty enjoyed had a spirited last quarter and eventually, after pressuring the Gwernyfed defence, scored a couple of consolation forward-driven tries. However, it was left to outside half Gethin Davies to brush aside several tackles to score his customary try from distance to bring the scoring to the close.
Unbeaten this season in all matches, Gwernyfed’s first fifteen travel to fellow unbeaten side RTB Ebbw Vale next Saturday with the second fifteen at home to Newport Expendables. With plenty of competition for places, confidence is high at Trefecca Road as the green. white and blacks enter the third month of the season.
