ATHLETIC STALEMATE

With Gwernyfed 1st XV’s match falling to inclement weather for the second successive week, the Athletic travelled north through the Marches to play Trefyclawdd in a hastily arranged match that produced that rarest of rugby results – a nil nil draw. With a plethora of possession in the first 30 minutes of the game, the home forwards threatened to cross the Gwernyfed tryline a number of times but were thwarted by a combination of excellent Gwernyfed tackling, which was a feature throughout the whole game, allied to their own limited game plan, which saw little use of their backs. In the last 10 minutes of the first half, Gwernyfed came more into the game but half time was reached with no score.

The second half saw the Trefyclawdd set scrum continue to dominate but Gwernyfed came more into the game, with possession from ruck and maul creating a number of clear chances that, nevertheless, went begging. A change of approach by Trefyclawdd also saw their backs come more into the game, with their inside centre prominent. However, as the game unfolded, the stalemate continued until the final whistle.

The re-emergence of the Athletic team, under the stewardship of Andrew Torrance and Gethin Evans, has been a major feature at Gwernyfed this season, with games most Saturdays giving players regular rugby. A home match against Monmouth accompanies the 1st XV home league game versus St Julians next Saturday, with after match carols starting an evening of entertainment to bring to an end the first half of the season.
