GWERNYFED U15 46  BRECON U15 24

Gwernyfed were due to host two home matches on the weekend and Friday night saw a large crowd enjoy a feast of Rugby as the Under 15s hosted local opposition Brecon at the Brian Jones Memorial Field.

With a drying ground the conditions were perfect for a running game and the youngsters produced some excellent Rugby. Both sides are well coached and drilled and let the ball do the work using their backs at every opportunity - sharing 12 tries in all. The first half was a clase affair, but the 2nd half saw Gwernyfed pull away to record a fine 46-24 victory.

Based on this display, both clubs would be delighted to have plenty of very good talent coming through the ranks to youth rugby soon.

GWERNYFED ATHLETIC 15  LLANDRINDOD 12

With the first frost of the Winter seeing the 1st team fixture away at Crumlin scuppered, the Athletic after a large run of away fixtures hosted Mid Wales neighbours Llandrindod.

The style of rugby between the two sides was a real contrast - Llandrindod's direct forward approach and Gwernyfed's desire to spread the ball to wide areas more often.

The more direct route was also a good source of gaining ground by the home side with returning hooker Kieran Price and Kyle Davies at No 8 catching the eye with their high workrate.

Scrum half Morgan Lewis instigated a blind side move and found Second row Lewis Meredith in support good yards were made and winger Ieuan Thomas was on hand to sprint over for the first score of the game with an unconverted try.

Llandrindod's strong forward pack were a real test for the home defence, but some great tackling by the home side - with Kyle Davies and Lloyd Rees especially impressive, keeping them at bay until the half hour when hooker Sam Davies touched down. Within minutes, a loose ball was pounced on by second row Jo Hughes to see the away side leading 5- 12 at the break.

Injuries and a large squad saw a few changes at half time and youngster Cameron Shine at 10 took advantage of a good stream of possession from the lineout - where captain Jamie Coles had a fine afternoon to pin the Llandrindod forwards back into the corners.

From another solid lineout, the ball was distributed well by centres Jonny and Lloyd Rees across the line to find wing Thomas who touched down for his second try wide out to take the score to 10 -12.

More introductions from the bench saw forwards Chris McGowan and Will Nicholls make a real impact as the game entered its final quarter. A missed penalty by the opposition gave the home side a chance to edge ahead and with five minutes to go with prop Will Nicholls powering his way over past several defenders to touch down for the winning score - much to the delight of his teammates and the home supporters.

The final score of 15 -12 saw Gwernyfed deservedly take the spoils in an entertaining game where the full squad had valuable game time. The Athletic are home again next week as are the 1st team with Club Sponsors Day taking place.'
