GWERNYFED RFC

A GAME OF TWO HALVES

GWERNYFED 37  BLACKWOOD STARS 10

Gwernyfed entertained Blackwood All Stars to a damp and sticky Trefecca Road in a game which eventually got going in the second half.

The first half started promisingly enough as with an early foray when young winger Calum Ferguson spotted a gap and outwitted the Blackwood defence to spped away to score a great solo on the blind side. A further penalty by Zack Snape was the only other score of a frustrating first half to take the score to 8-0.

The second half, however, was a different affair. Gwernyfed were stung into action after having a promising attack thwarted by the Blackwood centre who intercepted in his own 25 and sprinted in for a converted try.

With a one-point gap the home side settled and from a driving lineout Number 8 Lewis Bowen touched down. The more direct route was soon seen again when fly half Snape worked a move which saw the returning centre Jack Williams unstoppable as he touched down under the posts.

With the home side now completely dominating all aspects of the game Williams added a second wide out as the visitors tired. Young scrum half Luke Eckley was a constant live wire and he was next on the scoresheet, touching down after a powerful scrum surge by the home pack.

With the bonus point in the bag, full back Will Lloyd hit the ball at pace and powered over from another set move to wrap up proceedings at 37-10. A great second half performance to set the team up well for next week's visit to top of the table Crumlin. There will be a quiet confidence in the green, white and black camp that a result is within their grasp, continuing their good progress the league.

The Athletic were on the road yet again and visited the other club in Blackwood. The youngsters - bolstered by a couple of experienced players, put in a fine performance eventually going down 24-7. Having been on the road the last few weeks they are hopefully looking at a couple of well-deserved home fixtures in the next three weeks. Numbers are very strong for both sides which augers well for the future.
